Aims

To enhance the knowledge and practical skills of healthcare delegates on minor illness courses regarding antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) principles, thereby promoting the judicious use of antibiotics and contributing to the reduction of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Objectives

  1. Knowledge Objectives:

    • Define antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and understand its importance in healthcare.
    • Recognise the global impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the role of AMS in mitigating this issue.
    • Identify the key UK guidelines and strategies related to AMS, including those from NICE and Public Health England.
    • Differentiate between bacterial and viral infections, particularly in the context of common minor illnesses.
  2. Skills Objectives:

    • Apply AMS principles (right drug, dose, duration, and route) in the management of minor illnesses.
    • Use UK guidelines to make informed decisions about antibiotic prescribing.
    • Effectively communicate with patients about the appropriate use of antibiotics and the reasons for not prescribing them when unnecessary.
    • Handle patient expectations and demands for antibiotics through informed and empathetic discussions.
  3. Attitudinal Objectives:

    • Develop a proactive attitude towards AMS and recognize its critical role in healthcare.
    • Foster a commitment to continuous learning and adherence to AMS guidelines.
    • Encourage a patient-centered approach to managing minor illnesses that prioritises both clinical effectiveness and public health considerations.
