Advanced practice for primary care



The Advanced Practice Programme for General Practice is a comprehensive training designed for experienced healthcare professionals looking to enhance their skills and knowledge in primary care. This programme is meticulously mapped against the four pillars of practice: Clinical Practice, Leadership, Education, and Research. Over the duration of this course, participants will engage with advanced clinical skills, leadership development, educational strategies, and research methodologies to improve patient outcomes and drive innovation in general practice.

his programme of learning is for nurses working in general practice/primary care at the level of or wishing to work at the level of Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP). A minimum of three years' experience in general practice or a related field. Basic understanding of clinical practice, leadership principles, education methodologies, and research techniques.

Dr Hayley Jenkins

Dr. Hayley Jenkins is a seasoned medical professional with a profound history in Family Planning and Women's Health. Her journey in this specialised field began during her GP registrar year, where she had the privilege of training under a doctor who specialised in family planning and women's health. During this period, Dr. Jenkins attained her DFSRH (Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare) and LOC (Letter of Competence) for coils and implants, laying the foundation for her expertise. As a partner in a larger training practice, Dr. Jenkins took the initiative to develop a weekly Family Planning clinic and became a Family Planning trainer, sharing her knowledge with fellow practitioners. Her commitment to advancing skills and knowledge in this domain is reflected in her collaboration with the local sexual health clinic, where she held roles as a Family Planning trainer.Dr. Jenkins, known in Milton Keynes as an expert in her field, went beyond the routine by securing a bid with her practice to establish a community gynae clinic. This venture saw her working alongside a local consultant, elevating her skills and pushing the boundaries of her expertise. Throughout her career, Dr. Jenkins has been driven by three key components: General Practice, Women's Health, and Teaching/Training. These aspects have shaped her career into a dynamic blend of patient care, specialisation, and knowledge dissemination. Her reputation as an expert led to invitations to lecture and teach local GPs and nurses, solidifying her role as a key figure in advancing women's health in her community. Currently, as a salaried GP focusing on menopause and women's health one day a week, Dr. Jenkins also serves as the contraception lead for Milton Keynes and Bedford Sexual Health services. These roles, which she cherishes, highlight her ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive and specialised care in Family Planning and Women's Health. Dorthe Swaby- Larsen

Dorthe, an esteemed healthcare professional, brings a wealth of expertise and qualifications to her role as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. With an MSc, BSc (Hons), and RGN, along with additional certifications as a Non-Medical Prescriber, HE-Lecturer-Practice Educator, and in Leadership-Management, she stands as a seasoned practitioner with over thirty years of dedicated service in Emergency and Urgent Care nursing. Throughout her illustrious career, Dorthe served as a Nurse Consultant for twelve years in South London and later as the Deputy Head of Nursing for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Her commitment to education and training is evident through her role as a Lecturer Practitioner for Middlesex University, and she continues to share her passion for teaching and training through freelance lecturing. Dorthe's significant contribution to education is highlighted by her collaboration with a Director of Nursing in establishing a university accredited Urgent Care Training Programme. This program successfully equips Emergency Practitioners to competently manage adults and children with Minor Injuries and Illnesses within Urgent Care settings. Her dedication to education extends to her role as a freelance lecturer, where she imparts her vast knowledge and experience to the next generation of healthcare professionals. Dr Sam Thenabadu

Dr Sam Thenabadu MBBS MRCP DRCOG DCH MA Clin Ed  FCEM MSc (Paed) FHEA FAcadMEdEd Consultant Adult & Paediatric Emergency Medicine Deputy Dean & MBBS Programme Director, GKT School of Medicine Reader / Associate Professor in Medical Education Sam graduated from King’s College London in 2001 dual training in Adult & Paediatric Emergency Medicine in London before being appointed a consultant in 2011 at the Princess Royal University Hospital. He has Master’s level degrees in both Clinical Medical Education and Advanced Paediatrics and is completing his executive leadership Master’s Business Administration eMBA in 2024. He has a passion for medical education and is the Deputy Dean and programme director for at GKT School of Medicine, involved in the strategic and operational aspects of a new medical school curriculum at one of the biggest medical schools in the UK. Sam has been the lead doctor for the London Olympic Stadium since it reopened in 2015, overseeing major events such as Premier League Football, the Rugby World Cup, the World Athletics Championships, and music concerts with capacities of up to 90,000. At postgraduate level he is a RCEM examiner and was the London Health Education England lead for CT3 PEM trainees for 7 years. He continues to preach to anyone that will listen, and especially those that don’t, that that ‘children are not just little adults’. Academically he has written and edited 12 textbooks and has published in peer review journals and given oral and poster presentations at national conferences in emergency medicine, paediatrics, medical education and patient safety. A proud EM physician and educator , but a prouder still father of two amazing boys and a baby girl, who constantly catalyse his passion and drive to succeed but remind him of what is truly most important in life.

Dr Vasavan Agambaram

Dr. Vasavan Agambaram earned his degree from the University of Natal in 1993 and commenced his medical journey with an internship at King Edward Hospital. Subsequently, in 1995, he embarked on a career path in psychiatry, joining the department at Addington as a medical officer. His dedication led him to achieve FCPsych qualification in 1999. In 2000, Dr. Agambaram transitioned into private practice at the Life Entabeni Hospital in Durban, where he continues to provide his expertise today. Throughout his career, he has played a pivotal role in mentoring and examining both undergraduate students and foreign graduates, as well as contributing to examinations conducted by the College of Medicine.   Beyond his clinical commitments, Dr. Agambaram serves as an assessor and monitor for impaired physicians with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). He has also made significant contributions to the psychiatric community, having served as secretary and later Chairman of Sasop KZN. In his leisure time, Dr. Agambaram indulges his passion for travel and cherishes moments over a cup of tea. Samantha Thompson

Sam Thompson is a Forensic Paramedic and Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Science at St George's, University of London. Specialising in the care of patients who have been raped or sexually assaulted, she authored the Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee national guidelines on sexual assault and is a regular speaker for the College of Paramedics.Sam has been published in academic journals, and her podcasts are available online. She represents the College of Paramedics on the Intercollegiate and Agencies Domestic Violence Abuse National Forum and sits on the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine Academic Committee. Sam also has a special interest in paediatrics, remote clinical decision-making (via video and telephone healthcare), and myasthenia gravis.
