This course provides an introduction to blood results interpretation, exploring basic concepts and developing an understanding of blood tests requested in general practice.

You should have a basic understanding of terminology used in requesting blood tests.

  • Understand the basic concepts and terminology for blood tests.
  • Use a case study approach to increase confidence in requesting and interpreting blood test results.
  • Develop an understanding of key blood tests such as FBC, U&E, LFT and blood tests common undertaken in general practice and community settings.
  • Develop skills in understanding bloods that require urgent attention: such as : high potassium, low platelets, raised WCC, low sodium and raised inflammatory markers.
  • Identify iron deficiency and treatment regimes.
  • Consider treatment options and current guidelines for treatment of abnormal TFT, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12.
  • Recognise limitations of practice and when to refer.

The assessment process for the Blood Results Interpretation course is designed to evaluate participants' comprehension and application of skills in interpreting various blood test results. Participants will undergo both formative and summative assessments, which may include quizzes, case studies, and practical exercises. Quizzes will assess participants' knowledge of blood test terminology, reference ranges, and the significance of different blood parameters. Case studies will require participants to interpret blood test results in clinical scenarios, identify abnormalities, and propose appropriate management plans. Practical exercises may involve analyzing sample blood test reports and providing interpretations based on given clinical contexts. Feedback provided during assessments will aim to reinforce learning outcomes and support participants in refining their interpretation skills for effective clinical practice.
